Abstract

African Americans in the United States during World War II faced turbulent times. In Spokane, Washington, the same held true. During this time, Spokane went through a wave of anti-black sentiment, and Robert Johnson was the only African American student at Whitworth College. This paper discusses how he was able to have success in school despite the racial tension of the time.
