Research Project Abstract

The purpose was to evaluate the effects of a communication binder on the behavior of a 20-year-old female with developmental disabilities. The target behavior was appropriately requesting and working on the chosen activity. Interval recording within a reversal design monitored the participant’s behavior. Using a communication binder, the researchers asked the participant which of six pictured activities on that she would like to complete. If appropriate, she was reinforced and went to complete the chosen task. If inappropriate, she would not receive a reward. These steps were repeated multiple times. With the communication binder and contingent reward, high rates of appropriate behavior developed with a decrease in the amount and intensity of inappropriate behaviors. The use of the communication binder with rewards was successful during research sessions and other school activities.
