Research Project Abstract

This body of research aims to understand the experiences and retention of faculty and staff of color at a predominately white institution. Through 10 – 16 in-depth interviews, each lasting no less than 25 minutes, we seek to understand the experiences of this underrepresented population. This research builds off of research conducted in 2016 – 2017 that looked at the experiences and feelings of belonging among students at a predominately white institution. Previous research has found that students of color stay at these institutions because they find “sub groups”, such as cultural clubs, where they feel a sense of belonging and community. Very little research has been conducted that looks specifically at faculty and staff of color in higher education navigating these spaces.
