The Redemption of Mary’s Image in Catholicism and Protestantism

Session Type

Poster Presentation

Research Project Abstract

Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ is a prominent female character in the New Testament. Her character has been used and abused in the church according gender stereotypes. Because of Mary, women were pushed into submissive stay-at-home-mom-roles, while men claimed to represent Christ as an authoritative figure, looking up to Mary as a fertility goddess. These images have largely strayed away from the image of Mary the Bible depicts. This research looks at the images of Mary in the Catholic and Protestant worlds and asks the following questions: How closely do these images reflect the biblical and theological portrayal of Mary? Up to which point do they reflect the aspirations of culture and patriarchy?
