Man I Feel like an Unsexual Woman: Transgender Representations in Film and Television

Hailey Rousseau, Gonzaga University

Research Project Abstract

How are attraction, intimacy, and sex of transgender individuals and communities represented in mainstream and independent films and television?

Ethnographic content analysis will be used to identity themes in films and television that depict transgender characters and communities. This variety was chosen in an attempt to cover different aspects of the lives of characters. The construction of attraction, sexual encounters, and both past and present intimacy will be examined. This will include the characters that do not identify as transgender in order to make a comparison of how the media represents attraction and sex.

The films and television shows cover a broad range of genres. The television shows that will be studied are Nip/Tuck, I am Jazz, Transparent, Becoming Us, and Orange is the New Black. The films that will also be examined are Boys Don’t Cry, Paris is Burning, Transamerica, Cruel and Unusual, and Red without Blue.
